It’s close to Christmas and the Vtech Innotab along with other kids tablets like the Leapfrog Leappad, the Fisher Price tablet and the very expensive Vinci  are flying off the shelves at an astounding rate. Consumer reports had these children’s tablets evaluated by their panel of experts and stated that their kid-friendly content and learning apps made them a good choice for little children. That said let’s take a closer look at the findings of this report.

Firstly the experts – a dozen kids – played with all the tablets to gauge them. The children clicked their own pictures, read the ebooks and generally played with all the tablets for a number of days.

The Fisher Price tablet was found to have the longest battery life. Many of the kids thought that the Leappad offered the most fun overall because of  the ability to take and edit photos with the camera and tinker with the art studio app.

The Vinci tablet was judged to have the best touch-screen interface and the largest hard drive at 8GB , however it was the most expensive, almost the cost of an adult tablet at $480. A pretty hefty amount to shell out on a toddler’s tablet.

Vtech Innotab Tablet – Will it suit your child?

When you invest quite a bit of money in a tablet such as the vtech innotab tablet for your child, one of the first things that any parent is apprehensive about is whether their child will like it and hopefully play with it for a long time.  After all its just more than a one time investment, you’ll probably end up buying more cartridges, games and apps over time.  It’s actually quite easy to answer whether the vtech innotab tablet will suit your child.

The answer is if they have been playing around with your ipad, iphone or any adult tablet type of device – probably not!

If your child is used to playing with these type of devices extensively, then it’s going to feel like a serious downgrade for them and you will be disappointed that they are done playing with it so soon. Your kids will probably feel like they are playing with a first time computer because they are used to the blazing speeds and sophistication of devices for adults.

Let’s face it, if your child is used to the extremely intuitive Ipad interface extensively then they’ll probably find the vtech innotab tablet interface a tad simplistic. If you bought them the vtech innotab so that they stop would asking to play with your iPad or Iphone – that may not happen. They’ll be used to playing games like angry birds and what not on your gadgets so the simpler ones on the innotab may just bore them. Unless they really go ga ga over listening to music with their own mp3 player or watching videos…

The vtech innotab tablet will delight your child if you aren’t in the habit of letting them play with your tablet and other expensive doodads. 

To sum up – This is a tablet that’s going to cost you less than a $100 – Given that price point, you can’t really compare it to a $500 adult tablet.  Some people expect lightning load times from a kids tablet which isn’t really realistic. Plus you have to remember that a kids tablet is built to withstand kids handling it while an adult tablet is not.

So, if you have a child that is extremely tech savvy thanks to playing with your devices constantly and is gentle with a tablet when playing with it, then a better option might be to get your child a cheap adults tablet.

However if they aren’t used to playing with $500 tablets and iphones, they’ll view tablets like the Leappad explorer and  the vtech innotab learning tablet as their very own “puter” and you’ll feel its money well spent. Check out  the latest price on the Innotab.

Briefly, I find the Innotab to offer more value than the Leappad because of the ability to directly load content from a Mac of a PC with a standard USB cable. That beats having to pay for and download every bit of content through the website. The expandable memory is a huge plus making it possible to upload movies, music and video depending on what kind of SD card you put in there.
